INTERNATIONAL ANTI-CORRUPTION DAY COMMEMORATION 2016
Every 9th day of December the world commemorates the International Anti-Corruption Day. The day is set aside to take stock of the fight against corruption, looking at the gains, trends as well as challenges.
The United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) was adopted by the General Assembly on 31st October, 2003 by Resolution 58/4. It was a landmark international anti-corruption treaty. The General Assembly also designated 9th December as International Anti-Corruption Day for the purpose of raising awareness about corruption and of the role of State Parties in combating and preventing it. The Convention entered into force in December 2005.
This year’s theme was Fighting Corruption, Our Collective Responsibility. Kajiado County hosted the national event while the regional ones were held in Kwale, Tana River, Marsabit, Narok, Garrisa and Kakamega counties.
The national commemoration began with the launch of Corruption Risk Assessments (CRA’s) for both the Kajiado County Executive and County Assembly. Among other activities undertaken were training sessions for County Assembly and Government officials on corruption prevention strategies and related laws. At the same time, civic education was conducted through an outreach caravan that traversed various markets and small towns within the county with commission officers educating the public on anti-corruption matters.
The weeklong activities culminated in a pubic baraza presided over by the chief guest, Deputy Chief Justice Phelomena Muilu. Other guests who graced the occasion were Interior Security and Co-ordination Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaisserry, Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko, and the Kajiado County Governor, Dr. David Nkedianye, among other national government and county officials.
The commission was led by Acting Chair Sophia Lepuchirit and Chief Executive Officer Halakhe Waqo. The county Governor and the speaker signed Corruption Education Action Plans to show their commitment in the fight against graft.
