Wiring the future: ICT team streamlines connections

30/09/2025: If you thought technology quietly takes care of itself, think again. From September 8th to 11th, the ICT department rolled up its sleeves and tackled a long-overdue tech refresh at the Mombasa Regional Office.

The mission? Breathe new life into aging infrastructure and bring the branch up to par with headquarters — no small feat when you’re wrestling with years-old cabling, dusty switches, and a spaghetti mess of wires.

Out went the trusty-but-tired Cisco 2960 and C3850 switches, and in came the sleek, high-performance Cisco 9300 series — delivering lightning-fast, stable internet that makes Webex meetings, cloud services, and file transfers feel as smooth as a Netflix stream. The team also implemented an upgraded FortiGate firewall to bolster network security, ensuring threats stay out while connectivity remains seamless.

Cabinet makeover and CCTV upgrades

It wasn’t just about speed. The network cabinet got a much-needed makeover, transforming from a chaotic tangle of cables into a neatly organized hub of modern infrastructure. CCTV systems were serviced and reconnected to a NAS storage solution, now storing an extra three months of footage for added peace of mind. Remote access was also configured, meaning no more server-room visits to check feeds.

The ICT team went the extra mile — broken network points were revived, desktops and laptops got full health checks, and staff received one-on-one crash courses on using corporate systems efficiently and securely. Employees were also trained on how to connect remotely via VPN, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to secure, flexible work environments.

Hard work behind the scenes

Of course, it wasn’t all plug-and-play. There were bruised fingers, sore backs, and more than a little sweat involved. But as Daniel and Robert boarded the SGR train back to Nairobi, their smiles said it all: a job well done, a branch transformed, and a team empowered.

Beyond the cables and blinking lights lies a bigger truth: in today’s corporate world, technology isn’t just background support — it’s the engine that drives productivity, communication, and growth. This successful upgrade shows how the ICT department doesn’t just fix problems; they future-proof the business, ensuring we’re ready for whatever comes next.

After all, in the race of the digital age, it pays to have a pit crew that knows exactly when — and how — to change the tires.
