EACC urges vigilance as Conflict of Interest Law takes effect

06:11:2025: The Chief Executive Officer of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Mr. Abdi Mohamud, has underscored the critical role of the Conflict of Interest Act in combating corruption and promoting integrity in public service.

Speaking last week during the opening of a three-day sensitization workshop for responsible Commissions established under the Act, Mr. Mohamud emphasized that the legislation marks a major milestone in strengthening accountability across the public sector.

“The enactment of the Conflict of Interest Act was partly informed by the realization that most corruption cases we continue to grapple with stem from conflicts between the public duties and private interests of public officials,” he said.

The new law, he explained, provides a clear framework to ensure that public officers discharge their duties objectively and transparently, free from undue influence arising from personal interests.

Director Lolkoloi: Effective management of conflicts of interest is central to the fight against corruption

Mr. Mohamud noted that, as the body mandated to oversee the implementation of the Act, the Commission found it necessary to convene the forum to deepen understanding of its provisions and obligations. He further highlighted the need for proactive compliance, especially ahead of the upcoming wealth declaration exercise scheduled to begin November 1, 2025.

“Effective management of conflicts of interest is central to the fight against corruption. Every public officer must understand that integrity is not just a legal requirement — it is a moral obligation and a cornerstone of public trust,” Mr. Mohamud added.

The workshop, organized by the Ethics and Leadership Directorate, was held at the Sarova Panafric Hotel, Nairobi, and brought together representatives from national and county government institutions, constitutional commissions, and independent offices.

In his welcoming remarks, Director of Ethics and Leadership, FCPA John Lolkoloi, said the forum aimed to ensure a common understanding of the new framework for managing conflicts of interest and to enhance institutional readiness for its implementation.

FCPA Lolkoloi reaffirmed EACC’s commitment to supporting the rollout of the Act. The Commission, he said, in collaboration with the Office of the Attorney General, will conduct extensive public participation to develop regulations and administrative procedures necessary for effective implementation.

He urged stakeholders to demonstrate continuous commitment, strengthen partnerships, and maintain open channels of communication to achieve the objectives of the law.
